BLACK LIPS tonight at the Earl….See you there

The EARL’s 10th Anniversary - The Black Lips

Celebrate the 10th anniversary of the little music club that could, the EARL, with one of Atlanta’s finest musical exports, the Black Lips. The garage-rocking psych-punk quartet released a new album, “200 Million Thousand, ” in February. These guys are now an international sensation, but they’re still putting on the kind of rowdy, sweat-drenched shows that made the Atlanta kids fall in love with them. With Dan Sartain, Carnivores.

And one more….BEST IN NCAA FOOTBALL PEOPLE

Best Backfield in NCAA Football is in Atlanta

It’s almost not fair what the Georgia Tech backfield might do to opponents this season.

You probably know all about running back Jonathan Dwyer, the reigning ACC Player of the Year who combines speed and power. All he did was lead the conference in rushing at 107.3 yards per game and tie a school record with nine 100-yard rushing game. Dwyer, who will be a junior this season, blew up in the final four games of the season for the Jackets. Against very good competition in Florida State, North Carolina, Miami and Georgia, he totaled 574 yards on 65 carries (a sick 8.8 yards-per-carry average) and seven touchdowns.

Dwyer’s 60-yard TD run on the first play of the second half at Georgia ignited a 26-point third quarter as for the Jackets as they ended a seven-game losing streak to their instate rivals.

Then there is Roddy Jones, who is more of a quick scatback. He’ll be just a sophomore this year, and he really broke onto the scene with 148 all-purpose yards in the late-season rout of Miami. Then against Georgia, Jones went crazy with 214 yards rushing on just 13 carries – an absurd 16.5 yards-per-carry average. He scored twice against the Dawgs.

And now there’s a third threat in Louisville transfer Anthony Allen. He had to sit out in 2008 but in 2006-07 played 25 games for the Cardinals, rushing for 1,167 yards and scoring 23 touchdowns. In ‘07 Allen set the school record with 275 yards rushing against Middle Tennessee State.

On most teams, one might think there’s not enough balls to go around for a threesome like this. But remember this is Paul Johnson’s triple-option offense, and all this club will do is run the ball. I haven’t even mentioned quarterback Josh Nesbitt, who also returns after ranking second to Dwyer in rushing yards last season.

Long story short: The Jackets ranked fourth nationally in 2008 by average 273.2 yards per game. They could easily exceed 300 yards this season now that the players have a full season under their belts in Johnson’s offense, which did struggle in a bowl loss against LSU.

Georgia Tech has some tough road games at Miami and Florida State, but it’s not inconceivable this team is in the hunt for a BCS title spot, something the ACC hasn’t sniffed in years. Yet the Yellow Jackets are just 50/1 odds to win the BCS title – that’s a bet worth making.

THIS SEASON IS GOING TO ROCK AND THE UGA GAME IS GOING TO BE GREAT AGAIN FOR SURE.

Just a little preview for the Tech fans out there

ACC Football Preview: Ranking the quarterbacks

This is part of a nine-week series of blogs published every Wednesday and Friday leading up to the 2009 college football season for the ACC and SEC.

3. Josh Nesbitt, Georgia Tech, junior
Nesbitt was impressive last year running Paul Johnson’s wishbone offense, racking up 693 yards and seven TDs on the ground. He only tossed two touchdown passes, but the only concern was the beating his body took to all the rushing, costing Nesbitt nearly three games due to injury. However, a year into the system, combined with his fine decision-making, puts him among the league’s best and dangerous QBs.

If you’re in town, best be ’round

This year the 4th of July holiday is falling on a Saturday, leading many Atlantans to stay in the city for their Independence revelry and to partake not only on the 4th, but also on the 3rd…

An excellent choice for this weekend’s activities is Smith’s Olde Bar in Midtown, where Black Dominoes, Judi Chicago, and Noot D’ Noot are doing a weekend residency upstairs.

Judi Chicago is Travis Thatcher and British-born ATL transplant Benjamin Coleman, multi-instrumentalists who have concocted their surreal blend of acid house, futurist disco, 8-Bit Bloops, the whooping and clattering of art-punk and psychedelic rock and the rhythm and grind of ragga, jungle, Booty Bass and UKG / Bassline culture.

Both utilize a range of new and old electronic instruments, many of them modified, circuit-bent or built from scratch. Adding live percussion, guitars, bass, horns and anything else that they get their hands on, Judi Chicago makes a dazzling mess that bucks the conventions of live electronic music in favour of spontaneity and risk.

Joining them is Noot D Noot,a 10-piece ‘hypnotic surrealistic soul-party’ crew that’s a ’supergroup, not a collective.’ These guys are equal parts Motown and Stankonia, an Afrobeat band with a punk-rock ethos raised on Southern hiphop.

Following them on each night is Black Dominoes, a post-genre dance party DJ and producer rising in prominence both in and out of Atlanta.

The bands will be playing together and apart, so don’t be alarmed if you walk in and see a horn section backing some live electro or a drummer keeping time with the DJ.

(The artists involved enjoyed our Black Cats shirt so much they asked if I would alter the art slightly and use it for their flyer this weekend!  You can get the original here.)

Post from Whynatte blog

June 29, 2009

Last week, our friend Daniel at Esperanza Clothing welcomed a beautiful premium latte into the world. She weighs in at a little over 8oz, is chock full of vitamins, only 100 calories, and is the ready-to-drink coffee that his family has been eagerly anticipating.

Oh, and he also became a father to a beautiful baby girl. So a big congratulations on that as well. New latte and new child - not a bad week for Daniel.

Photos from this Saturday’s Whynatte + Esperanza party coming soon. It’s out of my hands at this point:.

THANKS WHYNATTE FOR POSTING ABOUT THIS……. http://whynatte.com/blog/

Of Course It’s the Coolest Contest Ever!

Our buddies over at WHYNATTE recently got themselves involved in what Creative Loafing declares “the coolest contest ever…” which is pretty high marks considering how off the chain naming the pandas was for the Atlanta Zoo.

Yes people its time to redesign the Clermont Motor Hotel and they don’t want some stuffed shirt or tight black turtleneck consulting… they want you!  Submissions due July 22.  And you know ESPERANZA is gettin in on this, mainly because second prize may be just as awesome as first prize….  even though I’m not sure that WHYNATTE will be able to fill their obligation of a year supply to the winner after this Saturday.
