LESS THAN JAKE will once again take the stage at MASQUERADE tonight and we couldn’t be more excited. I’m not really sure what has me, and most of the people I know, digging through old crates of records we loved in high school lately… I’ve speculated that its because of how much mystery and intrigue the INTERNET has stripped from bands and their music with everything being so immediately available at the click of a mouse. What initially seems like something we would have killed for in those days while rummaging for hours through sampler bargain boxes in WUXTRY and WAX n FACTS, in search of lost or future gems, has almost become a burden. An unending deluge of both new artists and re-releases, and infinite information about both. The INTERNET has made archivists out of all of us and there’s just not a whole lot of magic in that. Gone are the days of going to see a band for the first time having no idea what they would look like, and having only a clue to how their performance would play out from scraps of info you had gathered from poorly written homemade scene zines. Bands no longer seem larger than life. I miss those days, and I think a lot of other people do too. And its for that reason seeing LESS THAN JAKE is gonna be so fun tonight. They were one of those bands for me in high school. I was 15 when LOSERS, KINGS, AND THINGS WE DON’T UNDERSTAND came out on NO IDEA RECORDS and my friend’s older brother made me a copy of his tape. Being a massive OPERATION IVY and MIGHTY MIGHTY BOSSTONES fan at the time, I loved the record immediately and would follow the band through my adolescence. 3 years later I saw them for the first time at the VANS WARPED TOUR and was blown away by the scene they caused. There were at least 15 people on stage, many of which were running around in clown suits throwing pies into the audience and blowing toilet paper into the air from rigs they had attached to leaf blowers. While I’m sure their stage antics have settled down a bit… just as I am longer looking to get hit in the face with a pie at a concert… I can’t wait for them to conjure up a reminiscence of excitement from a time long passed.
Also playing tonight, and opening for LESS THAN JAKE, are the official band of the REPUBLICAN NATIONAL COMMITTEE: THE CASUALTIES.
