I got home last night around 8pm after a long day and seemingly longer run, made a cocktail, and finally got around to phaseone’s WHITE COLLAR CRIME as the rain continued to fall. The mix dropped sometime ago but regrettably got lost in the endless queue of music the internets supplies me with. I stumbled upon the .zip file, long looked over in a remote corner of my desktop, unpackaged that thing and let her rip. I really should have been more on top of this sooner as his MAD WEIGHT album has been in permanent heavy rotation since its release, but what a surprise. I love completely forgetting about something I was initially excited about and discovering it again at the most unexpected, but totally essential, moment. phaseone, Andy Jernigan, is by trade a beatmaker, however…. you know what, forget it. I’m not gonna ramble on pretentiously trying come up with new genre’s like “post-Dilla shoegaze trip-hop.” The mix is phenomenally good and nothing is too sacred to chop up and reorganize. Bon Iver, El-P, Panda Bear, Raekwon, Burial, and Banjo or Freakout all come in and out of consciousness and the phaseone & Frank Heat remix of Radiohead’s “Videotape” absolutely made my night. This is mandatory listening. Download link below.
